‘Branching’ Out with Fractions📚🌳
29th Apr 2026
Studies show that outdoor learning in primary schools significantly improves pupil engagement, mental health, and academic performance, particularly by fostering resilience, social skills, and motor skills.
As a school, we have been utilising our outdoor space so much more recently, and we have seen, first hand, the engagement from pupils of all ages, even in lessons they might have found long and difficult in the classroom.
Our Primary 5 & 6 pupils were fully engaged today, during their outdoor numeracy lesson with Mrs Doyle. She set the challenge that, using only natural materials found or foraged from around the school grounds, they had to build fraction walls from a whole one to 1/12ths. It was fantastic to see such focus, teamwork, and enthusiasm from every group and they all managed it! 🌿📚
